Precious Memories - Page 25
The memories of Brother Al and his family on the battlefield for Jesus are treasures in our great storehouse, and it enriched our lives to be acquainted with them. And many times, we think of how God, in His great plan and wisdom, caused George to want that particular car so He could bring us all the way from Texas to California, to one little service station out of the thousands in the world, to one who was managing that station who had bought that car when it was brand new in Del Rio, Texas. How great God is and how much effort He will go to to answer a person’s sincere prayers. How could we ever doubt such a wonderful Savior! All things surely work together for good to those that are called of God. Those that love righteousness, and hate iniquity, shall surely be anointed with the oil of gladness.
The Bible tells us to ask for the old paths and to walk therein. Life is shorter than we realize when we are young. Looking through youthful eyes, we feel we have an eternity to pursue our dreams, but life swiftly passes by and we find ourselves looking back, asking ourselves, “Where did our lives go?” If we could go back and start again, I’m sure we would all treasure every moment we spent with our mothers and daddys as children growing up, and then with our children as they grow up.
Years ago, when our children were small, we were traveling through the mountains one night, going somewhere to carry the gospel. It was late and we had been driving so long. We were worn out. In those times, we didn’t have money to stop and stay at motels nor eat at restaurants. George would tease the children and tell them we would stop and get them a hamburger if they found them a nickel. (At that time, you could get them for a dime.) That night, it was real late, and I had been driving to give George a break, but I told him I was getting so tired and sleepy and I had better let him drive. Looking back now, I realize my mind was tired and I wasn’t thinking right to do what I did, but God in His mercy sent an angel down to correct my mistake that could have caused a tragedy we would never have gotten over.
I pulled over to the right of the road (and at this time, the roads were only two lanes) and waited for George to get out of the car and come around from the passenger side to the driver’s side. We were on a steep mountain side. I didn’t put the car in park but was holding the brake. The door was open and when he got around, ready to get in, I started getting out of the car and, of course, when I released my foot from the brake pedal, the car started rolling! It was parked at an angle and it was rolling across the highway towards the side where the mountain dropped off thousands of feet below. Our four children were asleep in the car and George was trying his best to get in, but the door was pushing me against him as the car rolled, and just before it went over the side, George managed to get passed me and stop it. I was wide awake after we got the car back on the road and spent the rest of the night thanking and praising the Lord for keeping us from the snare of Satan that could have caused the death of our children. While traveling continually on the road, we had many narrow escapes, but we can say of a truth, God never failed to make a way where there was no way.
